West Jefferson Medical Center - Strategic Masterplan Renovations

A multi-year strategic plan was developed to transform and modernize the hospital’s campus in order to improve the patient and visitor experience. Nearly a dozen individual design packages were produced and coordinated to achieve the client’s goals. Critical renovations and upgrades included enlarging and modernizing the Emergency Department (ED), relocating the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Department to make room for the Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) expansion, enlarging the Endoscopy Department for inpatient and outpatient procedures, renovating the patient tower to upgrade all private patient rooms, renovating the NICU and its support spaces, and reconstructing all public entrances and lobby spaces to improve patient circulation. Each phase of construction was coordinated so that all facilities would remain operational while under renovation.

While the renovations provide the hospital with a new, functional footprint, they also allow for a fresh design to be implemented throughout the campus. Exterior and interior finish standards were developed for the facilities so that all newly renovated spaces shared a cohesive aesthetic. A significant goal for all the projects was the modernizing of the exterior appearance of the hospital, with a new façade for the patient tower as the most significant exterior element.

Originally conceived to have simultaneous starts, the projects eventually commenced with staggered kick-off dates to ease disruption to patients, staff, and visitors to the campus. Construction of each department was phased to minimize disruptions to ongoing operations. Some phases of construction overlapped, which allowed construction to be completed as quickly as possible while spaces remained operational. Overlapping phases required independent construction teams, all of which were coordinated and managed by the design team.
