University Medical Center - Burn Center

With a regional Burn Unit identified as a necessary specialty clinic for years, the newly-opened University Medical Center started the planning for a new Clinic using the existing underutilized space within the Medical Center’s design. Burn Units in Mobile and Baton Rouge were the closet options for severely burned patients. At UMC, with the region's only Level I Trauma Center in the same building, critical patients with burns and similar related trauma will have the specialists and resources necessary. The UMC staff and design team programmed and designed the new Burn Center to include both Trauma treatment and short and long-term ICU opens for varying acuity burn cases. The challenges included using existing treatment spaces, ICUs, therapy spaces, and an existing OR, all contributing to project complexity.
