Slidell Memorial Hospital – Cancer Center

Underutilized areas in SMH’s Cancer Center were renovated to add an Appearance Center and a Comprehensive Cancer Care Clinic for breast cancer patients and to renovate two existing Linear Accelerator vaults. The clinic was designed to facilitate examinations of multiple doctors for one patient on the same day without the patient having to move rooms. The design was inspired by tranquil, spa-like environments to make the patients feel more relaxed during their stay. Because the patients are there for an extended period of time, the rooms were designed to be large and comfortable. The Appearance Center is a space for patients to shop and get fitted for wigs and other appearance aids. The client requested the space have the feeling of shopping at a fashion boutique. The center is spacious and open for patients who want to being groups of family and friends, and for patients who prefer privacy, curtains at the entrance can be drawn for a more intimate experience. The Cancer Center’s two Linear Accelerators were being replaced, and this provided the opportunity to upgrade the finishes and millwork of the vaults and control rooms.
