West Jefferson Medical Center - POB Canopy, Concourse, Lobby, and Exterior

As a part of the overall strategic masterplan of the hospital campus, some of the most prominent exterior facades were renovated to modernize and rejuvenate the existing campus exterior. The Main Lobby, Physician’s Office Building (POB), and Emergency Department (ED) entrances received new drop-off canopies, and the spaces within were renovated to increase visitor circulation.

The new Main Lobby entrance interior and surrounding support spaces, including the reception desk, elevator lobbies, gift shop, and Guest Services offices, were modernized and restructured to accommodate the hospital’s growing needs. Where previous circulation was missing, glass corridors were designed to stretch from either side of the Main Lobby to connect to the ED and POB entrances. A main thoroughfare called the Concourse was created by demolishing administrative offices and vending areas to create a 35 ft wide corridor, reminiscent of an airport terminal, for patient, staff, and visitor traffic.

The exterior facades of the hospital were reimagined with new metal panels and curtain wall windows, keeping a cohesive pattern and material use across all buildings. The most prominent façade of the hospital is that of the Southwing patient tower. STBA worked with the staff at WJMC to develop a strategy to eliminate the existing concrete protrusions, erect a new exterior wall beyond the original one, and gain an additional 42 square feet in each patient room within. Each of the entrances received new drop off canopies that provide patient and visitor coverage under translucent glass and steel structures. The glass curtain walls of the entrances provide waiting spaces that have clear visibility for patients to wait while a loved one drove their car to pick them up.
