West Jefferson Medical Center – Emergency Department, Endoscopy, Ambulatory Surgical Center, and Wound Care

STBA was engaged to develop a strategic masterplan of the WJMC campus. Some of the main goals of this masterplan were to enlarge the Emergency Department, the Endoscopy Department, and the Ambulatory Surgical Center.

The renovation of the Emergency Department (ED) enlarged the existing footprint and allowed for the department to be organized into different “pods” that can serve specialized functions, such as fast-track exam rooms and exam rooms to serve behavioral health and senior citizen populations. A new entrance canopy and waiting room were provided for easier patient circulation in connection with the hospital, and a separate ambulance entrance was added to relieve congestion at the entrance of the ED.

The Endoscopy Department was relocated to an underutilized space on the first floor of the ICU building to make room for the expanded ED. This renovation added 5 new endoscopy rooms and 16 pre- and post- operative bays to the department. STBA worked closely with vendors to coordinate the new, enlarged Scope Processing room. The existing ICU space on the second floor was renovated to upgrade finishes and accommodate additional negative pressure isolation rooms.

The Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) addition expanded the hospital’s outpatient operating room capacity and tripled the number of recovery bays. Outside of the ASC, space for a new corridor was added on to the building to provide a non-public route for staff, supplies, waste, and patient transport between the ASC and the main hospital elevators. To make space for the ASC expansion, it was necessary to relocate the adjacent Wound Care and Hyperbarics department. The new location allowed for double the number of exam rooms and treatments spaces.
