Lakeshore Library

Lakeshore Library replaced an existing branch badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The one-story, 7,700 sf state-of-the-art branch library has a renewed focus on providing children's services and materials. It was designed for maximum flexibility to accommodate future planning needs. Reading/stack areas are open (free-span without columns) with maximum natural light from large north-facing windows. Expanded computer areas and digital resources are available for children, teens, and adults; including WiFi internet and laptop support. Mobile furniture, service kiosks, and shelving offer flexibility. Varied wall treatments and ceiling heights identify separate areas for adults, teens, and children; giving each a distinct character. Visual focus is on the children's area with clerestory windows, suspended art, and wall murals; providing ample area for programming and story-telling.

In keeping with the Library Director's desire for the building to "symbolize both the rebirth of the neighborhood and a commitment by the parish and its residents to the conservation and recycling of resources", the library incorporates several sustainable design features. These features include use of "green" recyclable building and finish materials, energy-efficient building systems/controls, and combination indirect lighting/natural daylight. The library also contains a multi-function meeting room which can be utilized by the community after hours and for children's functions during the day.
